Work and play

I’ve been working a lot lately and haven’t had time to post. Here’s one thing that I have to show for it though, finally:

Aviation Week article about the Lockheed Martin Samarai monocopter project

It’s an article about a project I’ve been working on since the beginning a couple of years ago, an autonomous monocopter. There are even 2 YouTube videos, the first of which stars me.

The smaller, newer vehicle, flown via remote control. It’s really easy and fun to fly, and remarkably stable:

The bigger, older vehicle, flown both via remote control and executing a simple autonomous mission using onboard computing and sensing:

Obviously it should go without saying that I am not a spokesperson for my employer and cannot go into details that are not already published publicly or otherwise approved for public release.

Pretty cool though, eh? There are actually a few different groups that have been working with monocopters but from what I’ve seen we have them all beat in terms of controllability, flexibility, and technical depth, and there’s a whole lot more to come.
